Evasive Action over
Sagami Bay
Shortly after bombing the Tokyo Gas and Electric Company, Pilot Lt. Harold F.Watson banks the B-25 Whirling Dervish steeply to avoid a Japanese cruiser that lay directly on the aircraft’s escape route to China. It was the ninth of sixteen aircraft to leave the carrier USS Hornet on the audacious April 18, 1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan. That United States Army Air Forces bombers could launch from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier was inconceivable at the time. President Roosevelt claimed the aircraft came from a secret airbase in the mythical Shangri-La. American bombers striking the Japanese homeland and passing within sight of Mount Fuji, the most sacred mountain in all Japan, delivered a succinct message to the warring Axis nation: America, the Sleeping Giant, had begun to stir.
Evasive Action Over Sagami Bay is an authentic historical document, offered as both a fine art print and canvas edition, countered-signed by American heroes that participated in the Doolittle Raid. This is a unique opportunity to own and preserve an important moment in aviation and U.S. military history.

ACCOMPANIMENT TO THE SYMPHONY
OF SPRING

DESCRIPTION
Spring has arrived in the coastal town of Phillips
Bay and so has the annual music  festival—one of
the most anticipated events of the year. While the
audience gathers ‘round the gazebo to look and
listen while three musicians warm up, the  rest of
thequartet—a violinist—practices her strings solo.
(Perhaps she’s a bit nervous?) A magical moment
for sure, the longer light of day is still evident as
the full moon rises, and the street lamps and
walkwaylights come on as a lovely overture to the
symphonyof spring.

A CHRISTMAS EVE DELIVERY

Christmas Eve Delivery is the third in William S. Phillips’ “Inns of Christmas Series,” having previously delighted his scores of loyal collectors with Christmas Eve at the Winchester Inn and Winter Visitors at the Kringle Hill Inn (right, both Sold Out at Publisher). This year, Phillips captures the spirit of the season with a heartwarming Christmas Eve tale. “An unusual Christmas Eve snowstorm has descended upon North Carolina bringing holiday travel to a near standstill,” Phillips explains.“Highways and airports are closed, forcing travelers to find shelter as the roads are cleared. For the fortunate family who has checked into the Fuquay Mineral Spring Inn and Garden, it will prove to be a most wonderful Christmas experience. The Inn’s gracious owners, John and Patty Byrne, knowing their guests disappointment at not spending Christmas Eve with loved ones, have sent for a Christmas tree with all the trimmings to be delivered to their room.A young boy with his faithful friend has volunteered to provide the delivery service in his wagon. After an elegant Christmas Eve dinner and some eggnog and spiced cider with cookies by the fire, our stranded travelers will return to a room decorated with the cheerful glow of a very special Christmas Eve tree.” Canvas edition: 250 s/n Image size: 20 x 15

ADVANTAGE EAGLE

.Advantage Eagle’ is a term that will be heard
frequently as long as the F-15 is flying,” says
artistBill Phillips.  Phillips likes the Eagle’s
capabilities: mach 2.5 and an unrefueled range of
1300 to1500 miles with the centerline tank in
use.In his painting, the artist shows the F-15
screaming over the Arizona desert on a training
mission. “To impart a feeling of power and
motion, the landscape in my painting is at a slight
angle and the foreground is blurred as theEagle
roars by at about 500 knots

ALONE NO MORE

Sweet Rose OGrady flew 124 missions, and
Alone No More chronicles one of them. “She is
returning from a mission with battle damage,’
says Phillips. “She’ddropped behind the
formation and was alone in the vast European
skies—one of the things most feared by bomber
crews, because then they became easy prey for
the fighters of the Third Reich. But now Rosie is
joined by two Spitfire Mark  XI’s of the 241st
Squadron. They will escort her home to England.
Rosie and her crew are Alone No More.”

AMERICA ON THE MOVE
In June, 1968,the aircraft carrier America took
up her position in dangerous waters. Seen here
launching an F-4, while an A-4 prepares to
launch, the U.S.S. America begins her tour of
duty off the coast of Vietnam. On her deck are an
A-3 Skywarrior (in front of the island) and two
RAmongthe Columns of Thor has double
meaning to it,” says renowned aviation artist
WilliamS. Phillips. “In Norse mythology, Thor is
the god of thunder and war. These B-24s from the
409thBomb Squadron,  23rd Bomb Group, are in
column formation, literally flying among Thor’s
cloud columns. They are escorted by P-51s from
the 361st Fighter Squadron , 356th Fighter
Group, as they return from their targets in
Germany.” Phillips depicts the aircraft flying
fromthe deeper, brooding colors that are symbolic
of war into the lighter skies of safety and peace.
The uncamouflaged silver color scheme of the
planes represents Allied superiority and the
coming end of the war.A-5’s. A cruiser and a

An Evening to Remember
Lake Tahoe

In the summer of 1941, the United States is still at peace although the winds of war are blowing through Europe. On the warm evening depicted in William S. Phillips' An Evening to Remember, invited guests begin to arrive at the George Whittell Mansion (the Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe) for a festive evening of cards and conversation.
Born in 1881, George Whittell Jr. was fabulously wealthy and was one of the more notorious playboys of his time. His life was fast paced and privileged, and his real ambition was to live life to its fullest, enjoying the fruits of his wealth unencumbered by the worries of productivity or work. Determined to exploit his position, he began building a retreat designed by Nevada Architect Frederick De Longchamps. By 1936, Whittell controlled nearly one third of the Tahoe Basin, including 27 miles of shoreline. Ironically, in doing so, Whittell helped to preserve the national beauty of Lake Tahoe and build what was to become one of the great historical landmarks on the lake-The Thunderbird Lodge

AND NOW THE TRAP

It is 1945 inthe Pacific. Three F6F Hellcats
are shown returning to the aircraft carrier USS
Hornet (CV-12) after a routine patrol. The
majority of thepatrol flight was over, as was the
majority of the war,but for these Hellcat pilots
and the Allied military, there were still some very
important things to do. “For these planes,” says
renowned aviation artist William S. Phillips, “it
was a trap’--landing on the relatively small,
moving deck and catching the arresting cable
with the plane’s tail hook. For the military as a
whole, it was winning the war.”

AND THE LIGHT SHALL PREVAIL

As Bill Phillips tells us, "My wife Kristiand I have
enjoyed several trips recently to the coastline along
Oregonand California and one day we witnessed a
storm that inspired the image here. The morning
dawned gray with a strong wind, the sea as fierce as
I’ve ever seen it, the waves crashing against the shore
and throwing their spray skyward. We watched as
afternoon waned and stood in awe as the sun broke
through, bringing life to sea and sky. I thought of
Psalm 27:1, ‘The Lord, is, my light and my
salvation...’ for He, like a lighthouse, beckons us
from the storms of life into the shelter of His love."

An historic limited edition fine art print
countersigned in pencil by Brigadier General
Paul W. Tibbets, pilot; Tomas W. Ferebee,
bombadier; Theodore J. "Dutch" Van Kirk,
navigator; Richard Nelson, radio operator;
and first time signer Morris R. Jeppson, Bomb
Electronics Officers.
The flight of the Enola Gay and the capture of
Iwo  Jima, were two of the most significant events
of World War II. I wanted, in some small way, to
pay tribute to those who captured the island fortress
even as I paid homage to the United States Army
Air Forces and the crew of the Enola Gay for the
mission. Both events hastened the end of the war
and made the invasion of the Japanese homeland
unnecessary. - William S. Phillips

BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE

As the firework displays light up the night sky with
a dazzling palette of color, we know it’s time to
celebrate summer at the Bay View Inn. The
150-year-old lodge features one of the most
picturesque views in the Phillips Bay Highlands. The
Inn is as renowned for the sumptuous meals served
on a stone terrace overlooking both the Inner and
Outer bays as it is for its nightly displays of patriotism
during the month of July. This night, classic auto's
are featured at the twilight cruise from dockside
through Phillips Bay culminating with dancing to live
music from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. If you’re lucky
enough to find a spot on the  west garden lawn across
from the heart-shaped pond,  you’ve got “The best seat
in the house.”
