Welcome to our first SmallWorks™ Fine Art Edition Show,
40 “miniature” works from The Greenwich Workshop Family
of Artists. Miniature art is an important part of any collection
and SmallWorks is the way to start yours. Such works are often
a collector’s first purchase because they are less expensive.
A single small jewel of art can be that final, elegant touch
in fine décor. On the other hand, a wall filled with
framed miniatures makes for an impressive display of a collector’s
unique style and range of interests.
The Greenwich Workshop’s SmallWorks are artworks with an
image area of 144 square inches
or less (For example, it could be 12” x 12” or 3”x
44”.) Larger than the traditional miniature
format (6” x 9”), the SmallWorks design gives the
artist slightly more space and dimensions to
play with, while still offering the collector or first time
buyer a point of easy and unique access to the finest art from
the finest artists. SmallWorks is about opening the door to
the joy of collecting. It is part of a larger program to not
only bring you the finest art from Greenwich Workshop artists,
but to seek out new artists from around the world. In Fall 2007,
we will present the SmallWorks North America™ Exhibition
and Sale of original art juried from an open call for entries
that has already begun. The Top 40 selections from that exhibition
will be invited to appear in our Spring 2008 SmallWorks Fine
Art Edition Catalogue. And you will be helping us to select
them.

Wa Girl
by Mian Situ
The Yunnan Province of southwest China is a mountainous and remote
region that is home to 26 separate tribes including the Wa. The
isolation of the province has protected the Wa from the incursion
of modern influences that have overcome so much of China. Many of
the tribal traditions and ways have survived to this day.
Most of artist Mian Situ's depictions of rural life in China focus
on this region, and while it may be an unfamiliar world with unfamiliar
customs, the emotions and dreams of the people in his paintings
are universal.

The Terrible Twos
by Bonnie Marris
“I did all the right things! I picked a fabulous stallion with
a great disposition to be her sire and I read all the books. In
May, we delivered a beautiful little filly. I worked with her every
day, teaching her leading, bathing, grooming, tying and not to kick
or nip. She was the perfect foal…. Then, one morning, I woke
up to the “terrible twos.” Suddenly she argued! She threw
tantrums! She bucked, she ran, she whinnied for me to leave, then
not to leave. She threw her brushes, dumped her grain, splashed
water on me, stomped her feet, and shook her head. Was it my fault?
Not enough teaching? Too much?
“She’s three now. Whew…she’s perfect again!”

Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Swing
by Scott Gustafson
Scott Gustafson's delightful Humpty Dumpty will bring a smile to
the face of even a "bad egg". As we watch him joyfully
swinging into the sky, we can only hope that this time, Humpty Dumpty
can hang on.

Birdcage
by Emily McPhie
Emily McPhie’s portraits of women and children offer a window
into her artistic education. The solemn, sweet little girl in Birdcage,
for example, would look perfectly at home with a collection of early
American paintings. “Birds often represent the soul or spirit
in my paintings,” says the artist. The birdcage itself is empty,
but if we look closely we can find the bird printed on the little
girl’s dress—has her soul broken free just as the bird?
Birdcage invites us to look deeper into our own hearts and imaginations
to find the answer.

Simba
by John Weiss
The name Simba is the Swahili word for “lion,”
but this sweet puppy is anything but fierce. With his silky golden
fur, floppy ears and big brown eyes, Simba will make
an irresistible addition to any dog-lover’s home. “My
goal is to capture the natural beauty of the puppy,” says Weiss,
“not to make something cute—because it’s cute enough
already. You don’t have to add to something that beautiful.”

Hortensia
by Cassandra Barney
Like elegant mirrors, Cassandra Barney's paintings of women reflect
our emotions and innermost desires. Hortensia's eyes may seem wistful,
but do her lips betray the hint of a smile? It's up to you to discover
