Quite simply, we do not have enough space on this
page to properly introduce you to R. Tom Gilleon. He is a contemporary
artist with a master’s soul. “I believe,” says Tom, “that simplicity
and strength is the key to fine art.” Gilleon’s contemporary approach
to traditional subject matter stands out because of his affinity for
shape and color in storytelling. Collectors vie for his graphic
rendering of tepees and Native Americans.
Red Bull II is
a contemporary painting in disguise. It is a series of geometric
shapes: a square that contains a triangle within a triangle. The bull
painted on the tepee itself is a contemporary graphic. “Such a symbol
would not have existed,” says Gilleon. “Their painting was more of a
petroglyph style, symbols that got across the basic facts. They didn’t
have the tools to paint as we do. I like to believe that if they did
have those tools, you’d have seen something like this.”

Two Guns

Two Guns
(Two Guns White Calf) was a Blackfeet tribal leader in the early 20th
century. He maintained that his visage was used by sculptor James Earle
Fraser in the creation of the 1913 Indian Head nickel, although Fraser
claimed it was not. More importantly, he was one of the most recognized
Native American leaders of his time and used his popularity to travel
the world to promote the preservation of Blackfeet heritage.
