Fine
Art Editions today are being driven by value. I speak not simply of
retail prices, but rather the return on the investment that collectors’
enjoy through the art’s artistic merit and beauty, impactful
presentation, importance, rarity, fidelity and the personal
significance the collector sees in any given work in relationship to
its cost.
Our Fine Art Editions embody this value. To the right is Z.S. Liang’s Trading with the Blackfeet, Montana Territory, 1860. It follows on the heels of his Sold Out at Publisher edition of The Signal.
The impact of this award-winning MasterWork™ at 33"x 55" is second to
none, and with an edition of only 45 pieces, few will have the
opportunity to possess one.
On page 20
you’ll find the first-ever Fine Art Limited Edition Giclèe of a Federal
Duck Stamp print. Joshua Spies won the prestigious contest last October
with his painting Long-tailed Duck with Decoy.
The Duck Stamp Print has an important legacy in popularizing print
collecting in the United States, and this, like the first Duck Stamp
print, this first canvas will prove to have a following decades from
now.
On pages 30-31 you’ll find our special Collector’s Edition of Astronaut, Moonwalker and Artist Alan Bean’s new book, Painting Apollo: First Artist on Another World. This special slipcased and signed book is accompanied by the diptych Distant Celebration: Planting Our Colors and Rendering Honors.
Astronauts The release of this book coincides with his one man show at
the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the 40th anniversary of the
first lunar landing. Imagine if you could own a book personally signed
by Christopher Columbus about his voyage to the New World!
On pages 8 and 9 we introduce R. Tom Gilleon and his contemporary visions of the West. Gilleon has been featured in Art of the West and Southwest Art (where he has graced the cover as well). Anne Morand, Chief
Executive Officer of C.M. Russell Museum, says “He has a wonderful
combination of both accessibility for the general viewer and yet he’s
someone who is always searching for the cutting edge, making his work
all the more exciting to serious collectors.”
As much as we concentrate on providing value to collectors, we value
our collector’s thoughts and opinions as well. We receive a lot of
great informal communications from you, but it has been awhile since we
have asked for them in a formal fashion, so we are doing that now. We
are calling it $50 for your Two Cents. It is a short, but concise online survey that takes less than five minutes to complete. Simply visit www.greenwichworkshop.com/survey
In return for you precious time and invaluable input, we will provide
you with a $50 gift certificate good towards the purchase of any
Greenwich Workshop Fine Art purchase of $200 and above from your
Authorized Dealer.
Sincerely,
Scott Usher

Trading with the Blackfeet, Montana Territory, 1860
by Z.S. Liang
2009 Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale
David P. Usher Patron’ s Choice Award
It is a good day for trade as a warm September sun adds to the genial
quality of this Plains gathering. From the early 19th century to the
1870s, trade for furs and hides was a lucrative business. Traders and
bands of Plains Tribes would gather at prearranged locations and
exchange tools, cloth, blankets, finery and guns for the Indians’ pelts
and hides. This group of Indians is well known to the traders, as the
chief trader has been married to the sister of this band’s chief for
several years. Other members of the trading party have Indian wives as
well, so a familial atmosphere of mutual trust and friendship prevails.
Z.S. Liang’s Trading with the Blackfeet, Montana Territory, 1860 is regarded
as one of his finest works to date. At the 2009 Master’s of the American
West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale, where it set a record sale price for a Liang original, the work
received the David P. Usher Patrons’ Choice Award, an honor bestowed on the painting by collectors
attending the event.
